PSU MBA Program joins with Northwestern School of Law at Lewis & Clark to Serve the Needs of Emerging Businesses
Portland, OR – MBA students from the School of Business at Portland State University will join law students from Northwestern School of Law at Lewis and Clark to offer combined legal and business advice to small and emerging businesses in Oregon as part of an innovative joint academic program announced recently.
The academic program is available to second and third year PSU MBA and Lewis & Clark law students and includes one term of coursework followed by two terms of on-site project work delivered through Lewis & Clark’s Small Business Legal Clinic in downtown Portland. In both cases, MBA and law students will work in teams to offer consultation to small and emerging business owners on topics such as contracts, financial set-up and accounting procedures, regulatory compliance, real estate, intellectual property, staffing and employee selection, management and marketing. Small fees will be assessed, but may be waived based on financial need.
The joint program begins in Fall 2003, with students taking coursework in the fall term, followed by two terms of clinical work at the Lewis & Clark Small Business Legal Clinic.
“This collaboration represents an outstanding opportunity for students and the community. Students gain important hands-on experience in dealing with clients and the problems of small business, while small and emerging business owners have benefit of quality consultation at affordable rates,” commented Scott Dawson, Dean of the School of Business at Portland State University.
The collaboration also furthers important initiatives for each school – Lewis & Clark’s growing national presence for its law program dedicated to small and emerging business, and the PSU MBA program’s growing emphasis on the Management of Innovation and Technology, an area of specialization within the MBA program.
