Melissa Appleyard , Ph.D., and Pamela Tierney, Ph.D., Appointed Ames Professors of Management of Innovation and Technology
Portland, OR – Dr. Melissa Appleyard, formerly of the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia, has joined the School of Business at Portland State University as associate professor of management and has been named the first Ames Professor of Management of Innovation and Technology.
Dr. Appleyard received her Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California at Berkeley and her B. A. in Economics/International Area Studies from the University of California at Los Angeles.
As a research fellow funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Dr. Appleyard conducted research in the areas of technology and innovation management, and business policy and strategy. This research has been published in leading academic journals, including Strategic Management Journal, Industrial Relations, and California Management Review. Dr. Appleyard also has worked with a variety of business organizations, resulting in 16 published business cases.
Dr. Pamela Tierney, Associate Professor of Management, has been awarded the second Ames Professorship in the Management of Innovation and Technology.
Dr. Tierney holds a Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior and a B. S. in Accounting from the University of Cincinnati. Her research focuses on micro and macro factors that influence the initiation stage of the innovation process in corporate settings, and has been published in leading academic journals including the Academy of Management Journal and the Journal of Management. She is an active member of the Academy of Management and the editorial board of Leadership Quarterly. She teaches organizational management and leadership at PSU.
Dr. Appleyard and Dr. Tierney are the first two recipients of the Ames Professorship in the Management of Innovation and Technology. The Ames Professorships were endowed through a generous donation from PSU alumni Gary and Barbara Ames. Gary, a former President and CEO of US West Communications and Media OneInternational, and his wife, Barbara, are dedicated to higher education. They are leading supporters of the PSU School of Business, and have made several gifts to the school including the Ames Scholarship Fund, which supports minority students seeking careers in technology.
